What the metric measures

A progressive pass moves the ball meaningfully toward the opponent’s goal under a stated rule (distance thresholds vary by analyst and tool). In StarkPitch visuals rendered from the football-ai toolkit, progress of roughly twelve metres or more is the working definition used for maps.

The point of the metric is practical: possession that advances territory is different from possession that circulates sideways. Progressive counts help separate those patterns in event data.

What it does not prove

High progressive volume is not automatic proof of better football. A team can progress repeatedly into low-value areas, fail to create shots, or progress because the opponent sits deep and invites it.

Low progressive volume is not automatic proof of failure. A side may progress less often but finish sequences with higher-quality chances, or rely on transitions and set pieces rather than sustained circulation.

Progressive passes also do not encode intent, coach instructions, or off-ball structure. They summarise observed on-ball advances.

How to read a progressive-pass map

Start with start and end zones. Advancement into half-spaces or the box carries different meaning from sideways progress near halfway.

Compare progressive share (progressive passes as a percentage of completed passes) as well as raw counts. Absolute volume alone mixes team style with match length and possession share.

Then pair the map with a shot map. Progression without shots can be sterile control. Shots without progression can be transition- or set-piece-driven. Both patterns are legitimate; they answer different questions.

A careful claim

In the Argentina–France World Cup final sample, Argentina’s progressive share is substantially higher than France’s across the open-data file. A careful claim stops at process difference and timing: when did France’s dangerous moments arrive, and did they require the same progressive structure?

An overclaim would be: “Argentina controlled the final because they progressed more.” Control, threat, and result are related but not identical.
