Expected goals caution note

A short educational note on why single-match expected goals must be read with sample-size caution in football analysis.

Source: StarkPitch editorial

Expected goals (xG) estimates the probability that a chance becomes a goal, based on historical shooting contexts.

In a single match, the sample of shots is small. A team can outpace its xG and still lose, or underperform xG and win.

StarkPitch treats xG as a process signal, not as a verdict. Pair it with shot quality, chance creation context, and opponent strength before drawing conclusions.
