Average Position

A single pitch point summarising where a player’s on-ball actions tended to occur.

Definition

Average positions compress a player’s involvement into one location (often requiring a minimum action count). They can hint at height of engagement and central occupation, but they are not chalkboard formations.

A full-back who inverts late still carries earlier wide actions in the average. Substitutions and multi-phase matches blur the picture further.

Caution

Average position ≠ role for every second of the match. Treat it as a spatial summary, then verify with video.
