Event Data

Timestamped on-ball actions (passes, shots, carries, defensive actions) used to build most public football metrics.

Definition

Event data records discrete actions with location, time, and often outcome. It underpins shot maps, pass networks, progressive-pass counts, and many pressing proxies. Coverage and tagging rules differ by provider.

Event streams are rich for what happened on the ball and weak for off-ball shape, pressing triggers, and continuous positioning unless paired with tracking data or video.

Caution

Do not treat an event table as a complete tactical film. Missing off-ball context is a feature of the data type, not a small omission.
