Counter-pressing (Gegenpressing)
Counter-pressing
Immediate pressure after losing the ball, usually near the place of loss.
Definition
After a turnover, nearby players may close space before the opponent can organise an exit. That is counter-pressing, often associated with gegenpressing. It is a transition behaviour. It is not the same as a sustained high press across a full phase.
Event proxies can hint at recoveries after losses. Timing windows and intent are hard to prove from counts alone. Distinguish planned counter-pressing from chaotic chasing.
Caution
A high recovery count is not proof of a coherent counter-pressing plan. Check where turnovers happened. Then check what followed within a few seconds.
