Possession

A share of time or sequences with the ball — useful context, rarely a complete performance story.

Definition

Possession can be measured as time on the ball, sequence share, or pass share depending on the provider. High possession can reflect control, or simply a deep-block opponent inviting circulation.

Pair possession with progressive actions, shot quality, and territorial markers. Sterile possession looks dominant in one chart and empty in another.

Caution

Do not equate more possession with better football. Ask what the team did with the ball and where.
