Possession Value

An educational framing: usefulness is a different question from share of the ball.

Definition

A team can have the ball for long spells and still create little. Possession value asks whether the ball was useful. Did it move into more dangerous areas? Did it create a shot? Or did it only circulate?

Open-data layers for the idea include Progressive Pass maps, Field Tilt, the xG Timeline, and a conservative transition board. Formal models in this family include Expected Threat (xT), VAEP, and OBV. They score state changes, not shot types. StatsBomb Open Data does not ship a ready-made xT column. StarkPitch Match Analysis pages do not print xT, VAEP, or OBV tables. Practise the question with the layers actually on the page.

Caution

Do not invent a precise value score from one public chart. Do not treat xT, VAEP, or OBV as upgraded xG or a moral verdict. Use multiple process layers. Common misread: more of the ball means better chances.
