Stable possession vs fragile possession
Stable possession / fragile possession
An event-data sketch of possessions that avoid, or invite, quick opponent progression or shots.
Definition
In StarkPitch's teaching sense, stable possession circulates without quickly becoming an opponent Progressive Pass or shot. Fragile possession becomes opponent progression or a shot inside the stated 10-second window after a turnover. These are sketches from StatsBomb possession tags. They are not a football philosophy.
Open-data layers already on Match Analysis pages include pass volume, progressive share, negative-transition rate, and the xG Timeline. A team can look stable in pass counts and fragile on the Transition Board. Neither label means control of the match or panic.
Caution
Do not upgrade stable into they controlled the game. Do not upgrade fragile into fear, fatigue, or Gegenpressing quality. Event data has no running distances. Possession tags include restarts. The 10-second window is a choice.
