Reading transitions carefully
Event data can sketch recoveries and the next actions. It cannot prove fatigue or rest-defence movement. Keep definitions narrow.
New here? This page uses terms like xG, PPDA, and progressive passes. The free Foundations lesson explains them in a few minutes. Continue on the Learn path →
Why transitions tempt overclaiming
A turnover can look like a story by itself. It tempts phrases like “they switched off” or “they died physically.” Event files cannot prove those claims. They can say possession changed. They can also say whether the next team progressed or shot inside a stated window.
Without a definition, every lost ball becomes a morality play. With a definition, you can compare matches. You still should not pretend you have tracking data.
A conservative teaching definition
On StarkPitch Match Analysis pages, a recovery starts a new StatsBomb possession after the opponent had the ball. A positive transition proxy is a Progressive Pass or shot within 10 seconds. A negative transition proxy is the opponent doing that after you lose it.
The 10-second window is a choice. Possession tags include restarts. Counts are approximate. That is fine if the text says so.
Read them next to phases
A full-match transition rate can hide a late shot cluster. The xG Timeline and half table keep the timing visible. Argentina against France shows first-half shot process and a late French cluster. Morocco against Spain shows another texture: few shots, a deep block, and recoveries that may progress without real chance quality.
Morocco against Portugal is the headline Transition Board example here. Recoveries are even, the 10-second-window gap is large, and the goal comes from a set piece. Leicester City against Manchester City is the club companion. Germany against Japan shows even recoveries beside uneven xG. Winning the ball is not the same as creating a shot. Creating a shot is not the same as scoring.
Key points
- Define recovery, window, and “progressed” before reading a rate.
- Positive and negative transition figures are proxies, not counter-press rankings.
- Event data cannot prove fatigue or running-distance claims.
- Pair transition counts with the timing of shots.
