Half-spaces without mystique
The half-space is a useful pitch zone. It helps describe progression and chances. It is not proof of sophistication.
New here? This page uses terms like xG, PPDA, and progressive passes. The free Foundations lesson explains them in a few minutes. Continue on the Learn path →
A zone, not a worldview
The half-spaces sit between the centre and the wide channels. They are the inside-left and inside-right corridors. These zones often feed cut-backs, through balls, and shots near the box. Naming them helps describe maps, progressive-pass end points, shot clusters, and pass-network hubs.
The mistake starts when the zone becomes a badge. Half-space occupation is not automatically modern or superior. It is not the same as a high-xG chance. A team may circulate there because the centre is packed.
What open data can show
Event coordinates can show clusters in those inside channels. Progressive passes may end there. Shots may start there. Average Positions can hint that a midfielder acts inside a full-back, not on the touchline. That does not make anyone a permanent “half-space player.” Substitutions and match state move the averages.
Pair the progressive-pass map with the Shot Map. Progression into a half-space with no shot is territorial occupation. A shot cluster after a transition is a different story. The zone name should not flatten those stories into one style label.
How to write it
Safer: “A notable share of progressive end points sit in the right half-space in this sample.” Safer: “Shots cluster from left cut-backs. That fits inside-channel occupation, but video should confirm the pattern.” Riskier: “They play half-space football, so they control the match.”
Use Germany against Japan, Argentina against France, and Brazil against South Korea for practice. Describe locations first. Stop before inventing a school of thought.
Key points
- Half-spaces are pitch zones, not a badge of tactical intelligence.
- Event maps can show clusters. They cannot prove a philosophy.
- Connect the zone to a question: progression, shots, or both.
- If shot process and occupation disagree, write both down.
